The road to circularity

At OFF Festival, we are highly aware of our environmental impacts. We thus have one very clear goal: to transform from the world's first circular festival to become the first regenerative event organization on a global scale. All year round, we search for the latest technological breakthroughs to close material loops. We don't have to tell you why that is important. But we do want to show you why it is more sustainable to dance with us during OFF Festival rather than staying at home. Welcome to OFF Festival'S Road to Circularity. As a pioneer in the field of innovation and sustainability, we have created a circular blueprint that can be applied to both a festival and a city. It's entirely feasible to view a festival as a temporary miniature version of a community.

Resources

At OFFDay, we have made the transition from “Waste as a problem”, to “Resources as a solution”. This enabled us to achieve a 100% separation rate.

In addition to plastic cups, there is another major source of plastic waste at linear festivals. Most visitors go directly to the token register upon entering. Here they can exchange hard euros for festival currency. One visitor gets an average of 7-10 tokens per festival. Cashless Payments

Every festival visitor knows the iconic image of the havoc, also known as the sea of plastic cups, at the end of a festival. Hundreds of kilos of trampled and contaminated plastic are ready to be burned. Hard Cups

Energy

One of the biggest impacts at an average festival is how energy needs are fulfilled. Most of the Dutch festivals are running on polluting diesel generators.

By installing more power boxes, we succeeded in gaining access to the existing energy grid everywhere. With this, we were able to supply 1595 kVA in 2019 with the grid compared to the 200 kVA in 2017. Existing Grid

By making the switch to Greener batteries in combination with the expanding of the NDSM grid, we have solved the energy problem. In 2022, all energy comes from 100% renewable sources. Over 70% is supplied from the existing NDSM-wharf energy grid, which is completely green. 100% Renewable

Movility

There are a whole lot of movements associated with a festival. There are thousands of visitors who travel to the site, but also a lot of suppliers. In addition, there are also many movements on the festival site itself with set-up and show. Almost all of these movements are at the expense of fossil fuels and generate tons of CO2 emissions. That is why it is important to map out all mobility and to manage it where possible.
